Teen Seeing Christmas After Transplant

December 24th, 2007 · No Comments

An 18 year-old girl that was struck with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension is thankful to experience this Christmas with her family and friends. Without a dual-lung and heart transplant in February, she most likely would not have made it to Christmas.

The 18 year-old, while still happy to be here, feels a tinge of sadness for her donor’s family as they are now without a loved one for the holiday. In February, the 18 year-old was living in Royal Perth Hospital with little hope of seeing Christmas. She was being kept on a variety of drugs most of the time and her organs were rapidly failing.

But then The Sunday Times ran an article about the girl. This resulted in a mad-dash of organs from Australia’s East Coast to Perth, in the state of Western Australia. The organs were flown by plane which was paid for by the government.

What resulted was a 10-hour operation that still only gave the young lady a 50% chance of survival. The biggest risks were infection and her body rejecting the organs. After 10 months of rehabilitation, her only complaint is that her legs aren’t what she thought they would be.
