The family of nurse Milagros Larosa, 65, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the maker of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline.
In the course of a year, Ms. Larosa was hospitalized 3 times for heart problems. Prior to taking Avandia, she had not had any heart problems or heart conditions. Ms. Larosa died of a stroke in December of 2005 after having been moved to a constant-care nursing home following her third hospitalization for heart blockage in July of 2005. Of the three times she was hospitalized, Ms. Larosa had to undergo cardiorevascularization twice. This procedure involves restoring the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart after a blockage has occurred.
The lawsuit alleges that GSK did not fully release the results of tests that were run before the drug was approved. The lawsuit also claims that GSK promoted the drug in an unsafe manner by claiming that the drug was safe.
