Prescriptions for the drug class Glitazones were up a third in the UK from 2005 to 2006 in patients with diabetes.

The drug group glitazones is a group of drugs that has “glitazone” as part of its name. It includes the popular oral blood sugar medication Avandia in its class.

In the time period studied, Avandia (or rosiglitazone) was the number one prescribed drug to treat type 2 diabetes in the United Kingdom. The surveyors expect that that will change following new warnings that have been added to the drug following concerns over heart failure and heart attack.

Avandia, in addition to heart attack concerns, also raises concerns due to its linkage to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH).
