A study released by DiabetesDynamics USA shows that half of patients that were on Avandia were switched to a different drug type or insulin. The other half of patients taking Avandia were switched to drugs such as Actos, Actoplus Met and Duetact which also happen to be glitazones. This is the same classification of drug type as Avandia.
Also, 40% of drug changes were actually dosage changes. Patients were commonly left taking Avandia but in smaller doses. The other 10% were people who were just taken off Avandia with no other changes to their drug cocktails.
The study shows that while doctors were changing drugs, the most common option was to change the dosage of Avandia in response to studies showing a risk of cardiac problems. Many of those doctors left their patients on Avandia in a smaller dosage and may or may not have removed other drugs from their regimen.
In addition to a reported 43% increase in heart attacks for patients taking Avandia when compared to a placebo, Avandia has been linked to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension.
