Throughout time, people have always sought ways to lose weight quickly with help of additives. Some of the most toxic compounds have been used as weight-loss aids including, but not limited to, mercury and arsenic. Later, people turned to amphetamines to help lose the weight and then realized that these lovely drugs were making them jittery. So doctors started prescribing barbiturates to combat the jitters from the amphetamines.
These drugs were pulled from the shelves when it was discovered that they were tied to heart valve damage and primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). Also, the weight loss they all caused was short-term and quickly put back on as soon as drug use stopped. Modern weight loss options, such as orlistat (the prescription form of Alli) and bariatric surgery (gastro-intestinal bypass, lap-band), have been tainted by the negative implications of earlier methods.
If you or someone you know has been affected by primary pulmonary hypertension, contact the PPH lawyers of Williams and Kherkher in Houston.
