Thousands of Life Years Lost to Speedy Drug Approval

October 30th, 2007 · No Comments

According to Tomas J Philopson and Eric Sun of the University of Chicago, 55,600 life years have been lost to the speedy approval of drugs following the Prescription Drug User Fee Act. This has been partially attributed to the passage of such drugs as Vioxx, fen-phen, and Baycol. This loss of life translates to between $5.6 and $16.6 billion in lost productivity.

The Prescription Drug User Fee Act requires pharmaceutical companies to pay a fee for the FDA to review their drug. In return, the FDA has promised speedier testing of drugs and a shorter response time. After this act, review times fell 9-10% and has decreased by 5% annually after the first year.

If you or someone you know has taken Fen-Phen and experienced health problems, contact the Houston lawyers of Williams and Kherkher.
