Suffering from a disease that will affect you for the rest of your life is not something that any one wishes to go through. Many people like to believe that developing such a disease is something that can not happen to them. This is not the case, however. Illness can affect anyone at any time. This is especially true for a disease such as primary pulmonary hypertension which, although rare, the causes are unknown.
Often, the initial symptoms of PPH are often not attributed to the disease. The symptoms are those that can be associated with many other illnesses and since primary pulmonary hypertension is more of a rare disease, a doctor usually looks at other issues first. Some of the initial symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling of the ankles or legs, fainting, or bluish coloring to the lips or skin.
Many times, a diagnosis for primary pulmonary hypertension is only given once the symptoms have become more severe. One of the more severe symptoms is chest pain. Once this symptom has entered the equation, many doctors are more likely to look into the deeper causes of the symptoms. Diagnosing primary pulmonary hypertension is not an easy task.
In order to receive a diagnosis of primary pulmonary hypertension, a thin catheter is inserted into a vein in the arm. The catheter is then threaded into through the veins until it reaches the left ventricle of the heart. The blood pressure at this point is then measured. A high blood pressure in this area will indicate primary pulmonary hypertension.
