A group of Pittsburgh researchers have made an important discovery that will hopefully result in significant health benefits to individuals diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension.

The researchers have discovered that a simple new blood test will allow them to track the progression of the disease far more easily than before.  Pulmonary hypertension has no cure, and currently there are only about 4,000 people suffering from primary pulmonary hypertension.  However, early detection and quick treatment are critical for anyone diagnosed with this serious condition.

With this new test, doctors will be able to determine quickly who does or does not have the disease, how severe the disease is, and its progression.

A Philadelphia jury gave a defense verdict a few weeks ago in one of the last mass tort cases brought against a diet drug company.

Danny Crowder of Texas brought a lawsuit against Wyeth, which was formerly American Home Products, claiming that his wife’s death was a direct result of diet pills manufactured by this company.

Crowder’s wife, Edna Faye Crowder, died in February 2007 of primary pulmonary hypertension (or PPH).  This lawsuit was one of the last of its kind, as most diet drug lawsuits were settled already with a global settlement.

The decision to rule against the plaintiff is not surprising, as these cases have historically been difficult for plaintiffs to win.  It has been difficult for plaintiffs to prove that an individual’s death from PPH was actually caused by diet drugs and not by a pre-existing condition.  In fact, this was the reason for the ruling in Crowder’s lawsuit.

Researchers at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons have announced a new breakthrough in the fight to treat primary pulmonary hypertension. A recent study of 405 PPH patients that was headed by Dr. Robyn J. Barst suggests that Cialis (generic name tafalafil) may have uses beyond its intended purpose of treated erectile dysfunction. In the study, patients were divided into three groups and given Cialis, a placebo, or a combination of Cialis and another drug commonly used to treat hypertension. The results showed that patients taking Cialis had increased quality of life, higher functioning, and slower progression of the disease. Participants only had to take the drug once a day to show improvement.

Bayer Schering Pharma has reported positive findings during the first round of clinical trials for its oral pulmonary hypertension treatment, Riociguat. The development of this drug is the first in its class of vasodilating agents.

The trials, being successful so far, will now move onto a Phase III study in late 2008 to determine the full effect of the drug. The Phase II trial showed that the treatment was well tolerated by patients and remained a safe treatment option with no serious side effects.

Head of Bayer’s Global Development team, Kernal Malik, M.D., said, “Riociguat has the potential to overcome limitations of current standards of care in pulmonary hypertension.”

If the Phase III trial is as positive as predicted, this could open the door for many patients who have not had a viable treatment option for their condition. Bayer remains dedicated to treating cardiovascular diseases, as it as done for many years.
